Say so long to the stuffy weddings of the past. Today's blog is meant to inspire any and all brides to, say it with me, be yourself! Historically, weddings are formal affairs, especially night time weddings, but time has allowed tradition to sway off the beaten path, and now you have the power to decide everything that goes into your big day.

Our inspiration board is meant for you ladies to pull creativity from and hopefully incorporate in your own wedding. We at Gracious Bridal think that if you can find a way to incorporate fun on your big day and still stay stylish and chic, there is no better way to celebrate. What kind of bride are you? Are you and your honey known for your amazing sense of style? Would you describe yourself as a practical joker? What ever you are known to be by your friends and family, try to bring that into your reception somehow. Your guests will appreciate you staying true to yourself under wedding pressures, and once the whole day is said and done you and your husband will be satisfied with the choices you made.

A great way to personalize your wedding day is with a continuing theme. If you love the color pink as much as we do, run with it. Are you down-to-earth and casual? The best advice we can give a new bride is firstly to, breath, then to stay true to yourself throughout the decision process. Don't let yourself be pushed around when too many opinions are brought to the drawing board, even if you didn't necessarily ask for said opinions!

As wedding season for the rest of the country winds down, here in Texas it's just picking up! With temperatures settling into comfortable 70s and 80s, October is a huge month for outdoor weddings in the South. For a quick blog post, we figured we would present a feast for the eyes! With a true love for monograms, our southern brides love to integrate their custom look where they can. Groom's Cakes

Hey, it's Wedding Idea Wednesday again! Today's post will be a little different, because it is a post for your groom. We're introducing the Groom's cake! You may have heard of one, but here are the details of what it is and if you would be needing one.

The history of Groom cakes stems from the southern part of the United States in the 17th century. While the usual, classic wedding is white with simple flavors such as vanilla, the groom cake can be of any flavor and variety, most commonly with fruits or chocolate. This tradition has started to come back all around the wedding scene. The current trend is for the groom cakes to incorporate and reflect details of the groom's hobbies and interest.

Though groom cakes are an American tradition, in the recent Royal Wedding, Prince William has decided to serve a biscuit cake as his groom cake. Since biscuits and tea are a staple of British life, the biscuit cake is something the British can relate to. This has definitely become a world wide trend! The inspirational board has some pretty awesome looking cakes. The designs usually revolve around sports. I love how it also comes in a form of cupcake groom cakes. If you can't read the small print on the cake with the cuffs, the bride-to-be writes "You may carry the cuffs, but don't forget who's got the keys! Property of Jen." How funny!

Groom cakes are usually served on a separate table from the actual wedding cake. However two different cakes at a wedding reception may be a little unnecessary, so most couples prefer to serve them as dessert for rehearsal dinners or slice them into small pieces and pack them as wedding favors. (Our clear favor boxes would be great for packing the cake slices)

You should partake in this fun tradition! It will add a personal touch to the wedding and surprise your groom. Let him know that you understand and embrace all his delights in sports, music or other interest while honoring him with a delicious cake. It would be fun to get creative with the theme and decoration of the cake. It also doubles as a wedding favor for guests, so it's a win-win situation!

Happy Monday! Ready for another color scheme post? While I was working on the board for the navy blue/nautical themed post, I chanced upon this "All-American" wedding theme that also incorporates the use of navy blue. These colors hold great symbolism for our great country, so make your wedding a celebration of love for your significant other and your country! And what would a celebration be without fun poppers?

It doesn't have to be the Forth of July to display your patriotism... This would also be the perfect color scheme for all our honorable men and women who are serving or have served our country. And for our readers who aren't living in the United States, the red and blue color scheme is a lovely contrast which looks modern, elegant and classy. And depending on how to style the wedding theme, it could even look vintage.

The red and blue combination is so easy on the eyes, and it's such a comforting color palette. It exudes a warm, soft and cozy feeling. If you want a brighter combination, matching red with a lighter shade of blue or turquoise will instantly light up a room. This bold and striking combination actually works well. I am in love with the vintage approach where the bridesmaid's navy blue outfit is paired with a classic red rose bouquet from the inspirational board. Love the pin up hair do as well. Queen of Hearts Inspired Wedding

Remember the whimsical tea party post I wrote a couple of weeks ago? I just can't get enough of the theme and I am so inspired by Alice in Wonderland. So here's another board of the most prominent character of the show: the Red Queen! The red and black color scheme looks absolutely fabulous! To add details to the theme, line candy and chocolate favors with our large red baking liner to give the favors a complete and dramatic finish.

For all our lovely brides-to-be who suddenly see themselves turning into "bridezillas", don't worry. This is your special day and everything has to be perfect. It is your moment... You should feel like a queen for the day! The Red Queen from Alice and Wonderland sure understands what it feels like. Though she is probably a little more dramatic than she needs to be. But take that drama and turn it into a wedding theme.

A red and black wedding is completely theatrical. The red simply exudes fiery passion while the black contrast keeps it cool yet sophisticated. Have an up-do for an elegant look and accompany it with a fancy hairpiece with feathers or go for a bird cage veil. For the adventurous and bold, you could even wear a red wedding dress! Red wedding dresses in western culture has been a trend for a while now. It is no longer seen as a taboo color for wedding dresses. If you find that look a little too alarming and intense, you could choose to simply add a red ribbon or small detailing such as red sequins on the train or bustle.

Classic red roses everywhere are a must. You could use them in your bridal bouquet, or incorporate them in your centerpieces, and even spread rose petals on the floor and table. You could also use decks of cards as part of the decoration, such as using the designs on seating cards. If you are not into the Alice in Wonderland theme, the red and black color scheme would also work well for a Vegas-themed wedding. It is all about the glitz, glamour, fame and fortune!

Oh, the drama and romance mashed into one theme! It is fabulously over-the-top, but I love it! You are the bride and you have the power to call the shots on your wedding, so do it the Red Queen style... Everything will be perfect!

Cooking Themed Bridal Shower

Gather all your girlfriends, because this is going to be one fun bridal shower! Bridal showers don't have to only be about bridal games, you and your closest friends can cook a fun and delicious meal together, and bond over the feast. That's a whole day worth of partying right there! Bake a batch of lovely cupcakes for the party, and give your guests a box of cupcake mix favors to remind them of the fun times.

A cooking themed bridal shower would be perfect for the bride-to-be who loves to cook. Here are a few ideas you could use to host the party:

- Have a do-it-yourself party. Have your friends bring their favorite recipes and choose 2-3 recipes that all of you can cook, depending on the time and level of difficulty. You could also split into groups to make different dishes (if your kitchen is big enough.)

- Get your guests to bring gifts that will help you prepare the dishes. Other than recipes, as mentioned above, they could bring the ingredients or cooking utensils, such as baking pans or pots. These practical gifts would come in handy to a new couple who recently bought their first house.

- If you do not need kitchen gadgets, you could ask your friends for their most cherished recipes or kitchen tips as gifts. You'll have a wide range of recipes and experience that would take years to accumulate.

- You could hire a chef to teach a cooking class during the party. It would be a fun way to learn how to make a delicious dish together. After cooking, you could use the prepared food as the party's meal and the best part is that everyone gets to bring the recipe home and do it again.

- If all that cooking is too much of a hassle, simply set up a fondue. It requires simple preparation and it is sure to please everyone. I consider preparing, mixing and stirring in the chocolate or cheese as cooking!

- You could make your own centerpiece by using wooden spoons and spatulas, as seen in the inspirational board above. Check out Studio Four 13 for a neat kitchen themed bridal shower. They included lovely decorations that seem pretty easy to make. You could place the decorated spatulas in vintage food tins instead of flower pots.

A cooking themed bridal shower is probably one of the most interesting and fun themes I've come across. I personally love to cook and bake, so researching for this post was very exciting for me. Safari Weddings

I hope all our readers had a great weekend! I went to the zoo this weekend and had a lot of fun. Today's post is inspired by my little excursion. If you are a huge animal lover or have a passion for exotic animals, a safari/jungle/zoo themed wedding would be perfect for you! Place desserts or favors on our personalized custom tray to add fun animal prints to go with the theme.

Animal prints can look classy if done right, and as always - only faux fur! Animal prints usually have very busy details. If you would like to incorporate animal prints into your outfit, you could use them on your shoes, earrings and a short shawl. It should be kept light and simple. You could also add a faux feather hair piece, which are available in a variety of colors. This was of course is inspired by the exotic birds I saw in the zoo.

As for the settings and decor, you could use tiny exotic animals sculptures as centerpieces and animal print table runners. Earthy color tones, such as orange, brown and beige work best for the color scheme. Forget about using common and tradition flowers in your bouquet, use exotic flowers such as Arum lilies, Arctotis or Marigolds. You could also place giant Mostera leaves all around the room or maybe even tie them to the back of wooden furniture chairs.

For the adventurous and outgoing couples, you could book the zoo as your wedding location! It would be a fun place for guests of all ages. A couple who hosted their wedding at the Santa Barbara zoo even had a giraffe feeding after the ceremony! Check out Max Wanger's photography. As crazy as it sounds, doesn't that just sound fun and interesting? If that seems too expensive or you would not prefer to have the animals steal your spotlight, botanical gardens are great places to have a safari wedding. You'd still be surrounded by beautiful and exotic plants.

Animal prints are fun to work with and can look elegant when paired with the right colors and not overdone. Have fun with this theme all you "wildly in love" couples!

Nautical Weddings

It's finally Friday! Ever feel so relieved and tired from the weekdays that you just want to lay on a boat to nowhere and let the soft waves and currents drift you away slowly? This is the relaxed state of mind everyone should have this weekend... That's why we are having a nautical themed wedding! If you are hosting your wedding on a boat, hand your guests personalized wedding matches and light up the night sky with fun sparklers. It'll be an absolutely beautiful scene on the waters.

Everything nautical-themed is really popular now, they are showing up in fashion runways, weddings, bridal showers, parties, etc. Navy blue and white is the obvious choice for a nautical wedding. It looks simple, elegant and chic. But for this board, I decided to throw in lime green color to give the whole theme a refreshing pop of color and the color contrast works really well for a fresh summer or spring look. Yellow would also be another bright color that would compliment a navy blue color palette.

Nautical weddings are so romantic. So here's how the perfect wedding will play out: You could have the ceremony right at the beach, with a vintage-looking lighthouse nearby. Just feel the cool sea breeze brushing across the shoreline as you make your vows. When the ceremony is done, the party shifts to a small yacht (the perfect location for a small intimate wedding.) You can host the wedding dinner in there, and then drift away to the endless horizon. What a perfect send off! Was that way too cheesy? But hey, that is undeniably romantic! It's so effortless and calming, listening to the soft waves and looking out to the bottomless sea.

I hope I have left you with a soothing and calming thought for the weekend. Head to a country club next to the beach for some inspiration. Nautical weddings will be an everlasting trend!

I've been talking about the great outdoors and nature-themed weddings. But today, I have something a little different: city weddings! We're heading to the big cities of dreams, New York, LA, surrounding ourselves with skyscrapers and a busy night scene. It's the perfect place to young couples to find love and fall in love. Start a fresh life, career and marriage right in the bustling city where hope awaits!

This post is inspired by the modern career women who juggles everything and still manages to find love. A city style wedding theme has a very "sex in the city - Sarah Jessica Parker" vibe to it.

City style weddings are all about looking modern, chic and elegant. Monochrome color schemes (shades of gold, silver, grey, black and white) are commonly used because they are reminiscent of skyscrapers and tall windows. And of course, no city wedding is complete without the bride's modern, flirty wedding dress. Short or tea-length dresses are high fashion and sexy! You can accessorize your short wedding dress with a pearl necklace, long earrings and killer heels for that high fashioned, career women look. They are also perfect for the summer.

If you manage to rent the rooftop of a skyscraper, you'll probably be granted the most enchanting bird's eye view of the city. The city night scene is probably one of the most romantic. With different colored lights lighting up the night sky, it's the perfect backdrop for any wedding reception.

Most commonly, butterflies stands for purity, naturalism, and represents a symbol of love and relationship - everything perfect for your wedding day.

Mountain Weddings

I've just been so inspired by outdoor weddings lately. Check out my posts about backyard weddings and beach weddings, both great outdoor locations. But today, we are on a scenic journey to the mountains! There's just something about warm pies that match so well with a rustic mountain wedding, maybe it's the vintage feel to it. It's a unique dessert that isn't usually serve at weddings. If you are into something even more unique and less traditional, treat your guests to our whoopie pie favor mix - a popular wedding trend taking over cupcakes!

The mountains are just perfect backdrops for your wedding pictures. The best part is how the overall color scheme changes in the different seasons: the blooming flowers in the spring, green for the summer, orange and brown for the fall and white in winter. Just choose a color scheme according to your wedding date. Mountains are actually popular in the winter for destination weddings. Adventurous couples who love winter sports such as skiing, and make their wedding a vacation as well.

But if the cold is not for you, you could always stick to the classic rustic theme in the fall that is equally enchanting. Wooden tables and benches, accompanied with fine china is a simple way to host the wedding dinner. Color it up with contrasting colors such as orange or yellow napkins and flowers.

However, with jaw-dropping scenery overlooking the mountains and valleys, your wedding should not need an overwhelming theme, or even much decoration. Just set a few wooden chairs for the ceremony and sit back to enjoy the view. Let breathtaking nature form the perfect venue!

Vegan Weddings

Today's post is dedicated to our small, but important group of readers who are often neglected - vegan couples! The food is one of the most important aspects of the wedding, but what if you're vegan and your guests are not?

First of all, serving vegan food at your wedding is a great way to expose your guests to how delicious vegan food can be, it also introduces them to your lifestyle, after all, it is your day to make a statement! It is also a great way to reduce your wedding carbon footprint - something most vegans value.

A "green" wedding is a common theme. So many people are interested in the green movement, I am sure it will intrigue your guests. The best and fun part about green wedding are the DIY projects. A few vegan brides have chosen to use paper flowers instead of real flowers for their bouquet. Not only are they environmentally friendly, but they can be made to match the style and color of your wedding. They will never wilt, so you can keep them long after the wedding is over.

As for the food, I am sure you have your favorite dishes in mind, but your guests might not be used to an all-vegan meal. So you could stick to familiar foods such as mushrooms, nuts and even couscous. If you are having trouble finding vegan pastry desserts, you can serve fresh fruits with cream - everyone loves berries and cream!

Many vegan brides are at a dilemma about including meat-options as part of the menu. Some brides don't mind catering to their guests preferences, but others are simply uncomfortable with having meat products at their own wedding. As I've said, it is your day, so don't feel selfish about it. You would not expect to see pork at a kosher wedding or beef at a Hindu wedding, simply because it is offensive and it goes beyond a personal choice. So no matter your reason of being vegan, personal or religious, your guests should respect your values. Plus, if you serve delicious vegan dishes, your guests would have no reason to complain.

Here's a great site for brides who need inspiration and help planning their vegan wedding. Rose Petals Vegan Weddings is a great website for everything you need to host a vegan wedding. They also have a list of vegan caterers which could be hard to find.

Don't give up on the idea of having an entirely vegan wedding. It might require a little more planning but it is possible! Just stay true to who you are and it will be a satisfying experience. Good luck!

Whimsical Tea Party

Welcome back to another manic Monday! Everyone is rushing to work, trying to get things done - just like the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. But slow down and join the Mad Hatter and March Hare for a whimsical tea party. A whimsical tea party would be great as a wedding or bridal shower theme! Pour some tea, and enjoy a batch of cupcakes, Alice in Wonderland style. After the wedding, give your guests a bag of cupcake mix favors so they can host their own tea party.

Alice in Wonderland has to be one of my favorite Disney movies, and it is a popular theme for weddings and especially bridal showers. Many brides love to incorporate details from the Mad Hatter's tea party. It's so colorful and whimsical. Here are some ideas for the decorations:

- Add little "eat me" or "drink me" messages on your cupcakes and drinks just like the movie (but I know that I won't be needing a prompt to gobble down a delicious batch of cupcakes!)

- Floral tea sets would be perfect for tea and they don't necessarily need to be of the same design. You could have mismatching tea pots and tea cups and have different designs on different tables. It's a completely whimsical theme!

- Use laced table cloths and doilies to add a feminine and vintage touch.

- Place a vintage clock or pocket watch as a centerpiece. This not only adds to the theme, but also help guests keep track of time and schedule.

- A pastel color scheme would add to the dreamy-fantasy scene.

- Have everyone dress up in their summer dresses and big sun hats to complete the "tea party" look.

- Since it is a tea party, what better place to host it other than your backyard!

Tea parties are great, but whimsical tea parties are more fun! If you love the theme, don't be afraid to go all out with it. After all, everything is a little weird and crazy in Wonderland...

Oh, the sugary goodness doesn't have to end there. Your candy theme wedding wouldn't be complete without an abundance of candy. You could have a candy buffet at the dessert table, alongside other desserts. This would be fun for guests as they relive their memories of being kids in a candy shop.

On my last post about backyard weddings, I promised to blog about using mismatching furniture for your wedding, so here it is!

Using mismatching chairs and tables is a great way to spice up your wedding decor. Mismatching furniture can mean different styles and colors. The look depends on how you style your combination. Wooden chairs lined with different seat fabrics could be used for a vintage wedding. Regular wooden or plastic chairs would look great for a simple backyard wedding. A great idea to fit more people in the dining table is to use benches on one or more sides of the table.

This mismatching theme is not only limited to the use of chairs, but also stools and tables! Round tables? So yesterday! Throw in triangular tables and have them in different heights. This brings quirky to a whole new level! Be creative!

The cool thing about mismatching chairs is the fact that you won't have to worry about renting or buying new chairs. Simply use the ones you or your relatives already have. If you don't have many vintage-looking chairs laying around, garage sales are the best place to look for them and only at a fraction of the price.

Mismatching furniture can look elegant and quirky if you style them right. So if you are ever unsure about the combination, simply stick to only wooden furniture with approximately the same shades of color. Be adventurous and creative!

Happy Friday! Today is all about going back in time... It's a vintage-themed wedding! As my favorite saying goes, "Everything old is new again." Vintage trends are everywhere, not only in weddings, but fashion and decor. Accessorize your vintage wedding with our decorative butterflies which would match a rustic, vintage color scheme perfectly.

When we say "vintage," we usually refer to the 1940s-1970s time period. A vintage wedding could be a whole theme or a simple wedding with a few vintage details. Here are some ideas you could use:

- Accessories: You could add vintage pieces you or your relatives might have. Clocks, lamps and vases are popular vintage pieces that could be incorporated as a centerpiece. You could also pin vintage brooches to your invites or seating cards. Sentimental vintage items personalizes the wedding and makes it more meaningful.

Seems like it's cupcake Wednesdays! If you missed last Wednesday's cupcake post, check it outhere. If you have already decided on having a cupcake wedding cake, you could make your wedding a cupcake themed wedding and use these lovely cupcake flower vase to decorate your reception, or use it for a unique centerpiece, it's simply adorable!

Okay, so now on to today's board. I thought I should add a blue color theme board since I don't do color-inspired boards very often. Blue is such a popular color in weddings because of it's appeal to both brides and grooms. Blue symbolizes peace and harmony - much needed on a hectic wedding, but also unity, trust and loyalty - essential qualities to keep a happy marriage.

For our lovely brides who prefer a girly touch, you could use pastel blue or turquoise which happens to symbolize femininity. Yellow is a great complimenting color to a blue color palette, because of its striking contrast and really adds a refreshing pop of color to the wedding.

I love carnivals! Carnival weddings are a great way to relive your precious childhood memories and combine it with the most important event of your life. As seen in the inspirational board, a common color scheme for carnival weddings is turquoise, red and pink. Okay, that doesn't really happen in real life, but forests still makes a great venue for an outdoor wedding! It's practical, functional and a little bit quirky... It's wedding dresses with pockets! This trend first popped out in 2010, but has been gaining more popularity in 2011. I haven't seen many blog posts about wedding dresses with pockets, but I think it deserves one.

This is simply an ingenious idea. Pockets serve a subtle and discreet function in wedding dresses, and is a convenient solution for many brides. Brides are often seen carrying their cellphone to keep track of their wedding and guests. But with pockets, they can carry their cellphone and even small accessories such as a compact mirror and lipstick to check their makeup at anytime. This reduces the hassle of carrying a pouch and risk of losing any valuables. During the fall or winter season, pockets allow brides to keep their hands warm, while looking elegant. This is a great alternative to shopping for wedding gloves which are usually laced and do nothing to keep hands warm.

When it was introduced in 2010 by J. Crew, there was only a small collection of wedding dresses with pockets. While brides love the idea, there was a limited selection to choose from. But now that the trend has caught on, you can find a much wider selection that would probably fit you better. There are already 12 different styles of wedding dresses to choice from on the inspirational board above.

Personally, I think wedding dresses with pockets is a trend that will not fade because of its practical function, and in fact, more designs will be made available in the seasons to come. So lookout for this bridal trend and consider it for your wedding!

I can't seem to get enough of rustic weddings.They're everywhere! Though it is the summer, many brides are early-early planners. So here is a post/ wedding theme idea for brides who are planning their wedding in the fall or even next fall. Happy Friday! It's almost the weekend, which means that it's time for our full-time brides-to-be to relax, unwind, and look at pretty inspirations that are easy on the eyes. I haven't done a color-themed inspiration board in a while. So here it is, a purple themed wedding! “Trashing the dress” is a popular photo shoot where brides literally ruin their dresses. All dangerous and dirty locations are acceptable: forests, fires, oceans, sand, dirt, you name it!

At first, you might be thinking why in the world would a bride destroy a dress that she paid hundreds, if not thousands for, just to have some cool pictures? Some brides have their new hubbies wear white or khaki instead of their tux so they can get “trashed” as well. Grooms will love this idea after being put through hours and hours of formal pictures the day before.

Destination Weddings: The Good, The Bad and the Far Away

Destination weddings may sound like the perfect solution but always make sure to examine the flip side. Getting married on the beach and not having to worry about rushing from the ceremony to the pain is certainly a benefit. Some people go away to get away, after all you did invite Great Aunt Mildred, she can’t get mad that she can’t come!

However, there are some things you must take into consideration. Wherever you are traveling may not have certain everyday things that you will have to ship in. While many companies, Gracious Bridal among them, will ship your favors and other wedding items to the destination, it can be more expensive and much harder to correct mistakes. Noone wants to deal with a guest at their wedding who has a little too much to drink. Wondering how to avoid this awkward moment on the most important day of your life? Continue reading for advice on how to politely control how much your guests drink.

1. Limited bar hours.

The bar can be open for a brief period during the reception and then reopened after dinner is served. Or the bar can be open for an hour or so in the beginning of the reception and closed well before the reception ends. The DJ can announce the opening and closing of the bar so that the guests are well aware of when they may get free drinks at the bar. This option is also a money-saver because you do not have to pay the wait staff while the bar is closed.

2. Beer and wine only

This is a very acceptable alternative. Liquor can be served in limited amounts as well. Most likely your guests are not going to chug their wine and hopefully not their beer, unless you invited many former frat boys.

3. Table-by-table service

Forego the open bar completely and have a table-by-table service where the waitstaff takes individual orders for drinks. The waitstaff can also carry around a tray with drink options and circle through the guests during the reception. Another option is to have a few bottles of wine at each table. No guest wants to be "that" person that drinks the last sip.

4. Cash bar

This is a perfectly acceptable option- just make sure to let your guests know on the invites. This also greatly reduces the price of the reception. If people have to pay for their own drinks they are much less likely to overindulge. Tip: provide the champagne for the toast at no charge to your guests.

Ready for the Royal Wedding? We Are!

Every little girl dreams of someday being a princess and marrying her one true prince, who is hopefully handsome and romantic.

For Kate Middleton, this dream will become reality on April 29, 2011. Prince William met Kate at The University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and after eight long years of dating, he finally proposed in Kenya this past October.

The princess-to-be was born January 9, 1982 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, Berkshire to parents Michael and Carole Middleton. She has two siblings: a sister, Pippa, and a brother, James. Kate is a commoner, as her father was a flight dispatcher and airline officer and her mother was a flight attendant. Eventually, they started their own company- Party Pieces, a mail-order party planning company.

She was raised in Berkshire and attended Marlborough College- a co-educational public school in Wiltshire. She then went to university, where she met Prince William, and graduated with honors in History of Art. The prince and future princess both attended The University of St. Andrews in Scotland. They then dated on and off for eight years.

As for the honeymoon, noone knows where this will be yet. Rumors about a week-long tour of Canda and the Scilly Isles are floating around. Be on the lookout Canadians and Northeners! According to The Daily Mail, "The couple have reportedly drawn up a shortlist of British honeymoon destinations-- because Palace officials don't want them going on an expensive foreign break while Britons see their living standards squeezed."

VH1’s reality show “Wedding Wars” features engaged couples battling it out in wedding-themed challenges to win their preferences for categories including clothing, food, décor, and venue. One episode featured a very upset bride- her fiancé won the clothing competition and wanted her to wear a traditional Asian red dress.

She ended up defying him and wearing an all-white gown. She showed just how important wearing a white gown can be to brides in the western hemisphere.

The western traditional white wedding gown is important to many brides, whether it’s for the history, beauty, tradition, or its symbolization. However, many brides have recently been diverting from the all-white tradition and adding spots of color to their wedding dresses in the form of sashes, designs, shoes, or even the entire gown!

What do you think- is color appropriate in a wedding gown? If a wedding is supposed to symbolize a couple’s love for each other and future life together, then let the wedding dress symbolize the bride’s personality to the fullest.

You may or may not have heard of the fairly new pre-wedding bridal trend known as the “lingerie party.” With a name as eye-grabbing as that, your imaginations are bound to be running wild, and we’ve got all of the juicy details on what it is, how to throw it, and who to invite…

The lingerie party is akin to the bridal shower as it’s a gathering of the female portion of the bridal party and invitees. However, lingerie parties are much more private gatherings. At a lingerie party, guests gift unto the bride pieces of lingerie ranging from wild to modest – but preferably wild and risqué. The draw of the lingerie party for the bride is receiving a wide array of new unmentionable digs to show off to her new hubby – the draw for the guests is to try to make the bride blush as hard as possible.

These sorts of parties are better hosted in more private locations, so as not to draw the attention of fancy families out to brunch or teatime. If someone from the wedding party is willing to host the event at their home, then perfect! Otherwise, nightclubs with private rooms are popular locales.

How Do I Tell My Social Network?

Over the past 5 years our ways of communicating have changed drastically. With the explosive growth of Facebook, Twitter and the Blogsphere communication is quick and ever reaching. One problem brides now face is how to go about spreading the word that they are engaged and avoid messy wedding invitation fiascos.

You don’t want your parents finding out about the engagement because your best friend Becky tweeted about your new relationship status. Good sense dictates that you wait until immediate family and best friends know before putting anything online. But after that the “rules” on engagement etiquette online get fuzzy.

If you want to keep the wedding small with close friends and family I would suggest simply changing your status to married after the date. This way the barrage of friends well wishes comes after the event and nobody can guilt you into including them.

If you plan on a giant wedding with almost everyone being invited feel free to let your social networks know. Changing your relationship status to engaged and letting out occasional tweets about the wedding planning is perfectly acceptable. However, be careful not to cross the line. As much as your friends love you nobody wants to look at 276 pictures of you picking out a cake, venue, dress etc. Likewise, Facebook events are something I would shy away from. For starters, there are plenty of other online ways to spread your wedding invitations, without your wedding popping up on your friend’s events next to the Saturday kegger at Mike’s house.

Controlling everything that goes on about your wedding online will be impossible, once the invitations come out. Unfortunately, with the way we communicate now the friend you left out will find out sooner rather than later, and feelings will likely get hurt. However, social networking also allows you to share the special event with family and friends who live to far away to travel or who you have fallen out of touch with. Socially networking brings good and bad to the table, but if you use caution, most problems should be avoided.

P.S. Wedding albums are the best to put online! I know I like nothing better than looking through friend’s wedding albums. But once again don’t put up all 2000 pictures…we love you just not quite that much.

To DIY or Not?

When planning your wedding undoubtedly you’ve run into some of the coolest DIY tutorials online. The temptation to do half your wedding DIY, and save money to splurge on honeymoon, reception, dress or just to save, is irresistible however, it is best to approach the area with caution. Unless you are Martha Stewart you will probably not possess all the necessary skills and tools to do all the DIY tutorials, not to mention time. You are already planning a wedding and trying to keep your life sane and adding numerous projects is sure to destroy what is left of your sanity.

Doing some DIY projects can be tons of fun and they are a great way to save you some money. Often brides experience great success doing DIY wedding favors and many have said it saved them money to use elsewhere in their budgets. Often it can be a good way to occupy over-helpful mothers and friends, while you work on planning your wedding.

Simple DIY projects are the best to being with, such as deconstructing roses to get your own rose petals. If you have experience with crafts you should know your own limits and know if any expensive items are required for the idea you have. Often at least one bridesmaid will be crafty and you can rely on her for help, but make sure not to smother her, it may be your day but you should not abuse that fact!

The bottom line is if you have a tight budget a DIY project may be a great way to save some money. There are many online ideas and books dedicated to wedding crafts where anybody can find the perfect project(s) for their wedding. However, make sure to avoid taking too many crafts and crafts that are beyond your skill set. Nobody wants to realize two weeks before the wedding that they cannot finish their project and have to do without on their wedding day!

April Showers bring....Bridal Showers!

First: how is the bridal shower different from the bachelorette party?

Well, the bachelorette party is more about “fun,” the focus being on the bride having a great night out with her best friends – the bridesmaids.

The bridal shower, on the other hand, is more about the bride getting “stuff.” Now, this is important stuff, of course. This is where the REGISTRY comes into play…

The wedding registry is a key element of the bridal shower. The registry is the list of gifts from certain retailers that the bride sets up herself (with the groom in mind too, of course). These are gifts that the young couple will need to start their life off together right – blenders, coffee makers, cooking utensils and the like. All of you fans of The Office might remembers Stanley’s toaster dilemma after an important bridal shower was called-off:

Alright, so the bridal shower is a time to present lovely gifts to the bride – but who is invited? Traditionally, bridal showers have been exclusively for women. These are women that are invited to attend the wedding, of course. But in more recent decades, the invitation has been extended to men as well. These co-ed showers have been coined the name “Jack and Jill” bridal showers.

But the most important guest of the shower is the one who plans it…

ATTENTION: MAID OF HONOR

It is typical for the Maid of Honor of the wedding party to plan and host the bridal shower. She is typically in charge of the guest list - with the bride’s approval - choosing the location, the time, creating and sending the invitations, and keeping track of RSVPs. Yes, this is a lot of work! But the Maid of Honor is only really in charge of the two best parties of the wedding tradition – the bridal shower and the bachelorette party – and the rest of her duties are “consulting” duties. So really, she gets to have the most fun out of the whole business!

Another important detail of the bridal shower is the theme. You don’t NEED to have a theme for your shower, but really - it’s way more fun if you do! If you’re a film fanatic, base the theme off of your favorite movie! But if you’d rather keep it simple, you could always base the theme on something basic, like the season of the shower, or your favorite color, dessert, or drink. Who doesn’t love a good mimosa bridal shower?

On that note, alcoholic beverages are acceptable at bridal showers, but make sure you provide non-alcoholic beverages as well. Since bridal showers are typically held in the late morning or afternoon, serving tasty juice or soda is usually expected.

Make sure you’ve got some tricks up your sleeve – and by tricks, we mean games. Unless the bride has a serious dislike for fun and games, make a list of cute game ideas that are simple and could be played at the shower with little organization. Twister, Settlers of Catan, and Clue are probably not the best game ides. We’re thinking more like Bridal Bingo, Celebrity Match-Maker, and Guess What’s in My Purse (yes, this is a real game).

And now, it is up to the bride and groom to wrap it all up. Thank-You notes are expected by your guests, and why shouldn’t they be? They’ve just bestowed a plethora of gifts upon you! Guests tend to be big fans of hand-written Thank-You notes – or, at least, not a mass “thanks!” email.

Debunking the Many Myths of Love!

Well, that time of year has come and gone, again– Valentine’s Day, the holiday of love, and then spring – the season of love. Is your romance blossoming? Are you about to take the plunge into married life? If you are, congratulations! Although your single friends may have been sitting at home this Valentine’s day with a gallon of ice cream, resenting your budding romance, we’re here to applaud you – and as a belated V-Day gift to you, we’d like to debunk some marriage myths that have been circling around our bitter society lately:

1) Because of the increased life span on the average human being, marriages cannot realistically be expected to last as long as they used to (back when people thought smoking was good for your lungs).

FALSE! There is absolutely no real evidence to back up this claim. The main reason our average life span has increased is because infant mortality rates have lowered over the past few decades. Also, because humans are aware of the increased life span, getting married later in life has become a trend. Taking time to get to know your partner for a longer period prior to marriage has shown an increase in sustained happiness in relationships. So don’t listen to your grandma when she tells you you’re getting old and should settle down – you’re in no rush!

2) Women with higher education are less likely to get married.

FALSE! How can anyone still think this is true? Female college grads are actually MORE likely to get married than their less-educated counterparts. In sum, smart girls really do get the guy.

All the fellas say, "whooaa!"

3) To get lucky in love, you really just have to be lucky.

FALSE! Studies show that the happiest couples consider themselves best friends who have sustained a solid, trusting relationship and share compatible values and interests.

Sharing hobbies (and bicycles) is a key element to a healthy relationship.

A Stag and Doe party isn’t just another money-suck bachelor/bachelorette party – and that’s why you probably haven’t ever heard of it. A tradition originating in Canada and the United Kingdom, Stag and Doe does not preclude the bride and groom from hosting their respective bachelor parties, but rather, functions to raise money for them.

Of the wedding party guests, typically only the closest are invited to participate in this special party. When Katy Perry got engaged this past New Year’s Eve, the web was a-buzz about her ring. And what a gorgeous ring indeed – I was half expecting her to receive some sort of cupcake-bubblegum-pink toy jewel but the rock on her finger today is a fine alternative.

But what’s all the hubbub about? Why are modern engagements so ring-obsessed? These days, when a woman gets engaged, it’s all about THE RING! How big is the diamond? What cut? What’s the band look like? The obsession over Katy Perry’s new ring made us curious – how did this ring tradition begin? A little research turned up a lot of interesting, little-known facts.

The tradition of giving and receiving engagement rings originated in Ancient Egypt, only in those days, the rings were made of plants or flowers that fiancés looped around their fingers (no Tiffany & Co. down the road from the Sphinx – they had to make due).

These rings symbolized commitment, love, eternity, fidelity, and honor, and today they essentially stand for the same thing. The Egyptians placed the ring on the fourth finger because they believed that this finger had a vein that connected straight to the heart. This vein is located on the fourth finger on the left hand because the heart is located on the left side of the body. Pretty cute, huh?

In the Middle East, engagement rings acted as puzzles that needed to be deconstructed and reconstructed. The idea behind this came about when the Middle Eastern men had to leave their wives for extended periods of time. In order to make sure their wives did not act disloyal while they were away, the puzzle rings were fitted perfectly around the wives’ fingers, and if removed, immediately collapsed. Reconstructing the puzzle rings required lots of skill and knowledge, and therefore kept the women faithful.

In the United States, it is more common for only women to wear engagement rings. However, in Brazil, both men and women wear plain engagement rings on their right hands. After the wedding, they move the rings to the left hand. Women do the same in Germany – rings are worn on the right hand until the wedding, when they are shifted onto the left hand.

Although some ancient traditions have been significantly upgraded in modern times, the original sentiment of the engagement ring remains the same. The never-ending loop around your finger, the gorgeous band that holds your diamond in place, represents your eternal love for your fiancé and your commitment to one another – certainly a sentiment worth keeping alive throughout the centuries.

Wedding Q & A: Bridal Showers for Destination Weddings

Question: It's my understanding that I should only invite those guests to the bridal shower who will be attending the wedding. I'm having a destination wedding in another state, does this rule still apply? If so, how do I include those friends and family who will be unable to attend the wedding?

Answer: Thanks for the sticky question!! Actually, the rule of thumb is: If they are invited to (not necessarily attending) the wedding, they may be invited to the shower. Which has always made sense because it would be quite tacky to request a gift, but not their presence at the wedding. However, in light of the proliferation of destination weddings, there are many people that would want to wish the bride and groom well, but cannot travel. I am assuming that someone is hosting the shower for you (Shockingly, I have seen a bride host her own shower before); therefore she may have her finger on the pulse of the guest list. Perhaps you are all very close at work, and this is customary, or dear old aunts that just can’t travel. I had to go to my arsenal of information because, today, things are somewhat different. Consulting with three respected advisors about this sticky situation, I received the following three answers: A. If a bride, for any reason, does not or cannot invite someone to the wedding, then they should not be invited to a shower. These friends and family members will probably send a wedding gift anyway. B. I’m sure her co-workers and close relatives understand, and would want to participate in the celebration, so it would be acceptable to invite them, as long as it is customary in that social group to do so. C. Here in New York, ALL of my friends have gone home, out-of-state, to get married. We host showers for each other, knowing that an invitation to the wedding is not forthcoming – she knows we will be unable to attend. I can’t imagine not having a shower for each other. So, perhaps I have muddied the waters, or cleared the air for you. In any event, to be a gracious bride, I would consider the personalities of your two families, some are very strict about etiquette, and make your decision accordingly.

Wedding Q & A: Ceremony Seating Arrangments

Hi JoAnne. First the easy question! The groom's grandmother is the first in the processional escorted by an usher and followed closely by her husband. In some areas, the grandfather is already seated and the grandmother is escorted alone by an usher. The bride's grandmother(s) are next. Second, this is the stickier issue, but fortunately, etiquette is no longer as stringent as it used to be. It is not a law, but a guide for civility. As each family is unique, you have a variety of options. If there is no animosity between the brides parents, then they may both be seated on the front row as a show of support and love for their daughter. Otherwise, it is perfectly acceptable that Dad be seated on the second pew. Should even that be a strained situation, the mother of the bride's family can occupy the pews in front of the father-of-the-bride, giving a buffer. When to seat the Dad if he is not escorting the bride would be before the grandmothers. Again, let common sense dictate what you should do, if the formal etiquette would put a strain on the situation. Regards, Brenda

Hi Laura, Have you considered having just the mothers light the unity candle? Though you may have wanted your dad to share in this, it would make an easier situation for the grooms side. There are a couple of choices for seating. Some etiquette experts suggest that the first row seating is for the parent with whom the groom lived with after the divorce (or whom he is closer to). Other's state that it would be the mother, who is joined by her husband, if she is remarried, and then her immediate family. Most of us have pearls in the back of our jewelry box, or passed down from a dear old aunt, but don’t know their value – or if they are even real. There are many kinds of genuine pearls, Akoya, Tahitian, Freshwater, Saltwater, Cultured and more. Unfortunately, there are also a multitude of fake pearls out there too, made from glass, paste or even shells.

There are three simple ways to determine if your pearls are real.

The “Tooth Test” - Take your jewelry and run one of the pearls against the biting edge of your front teeth. If there is a gritty feeling it is probably a real pearl. Compare the texture to that of a smooth bead, a piece of plastic or glass. Pearls are concentric layers of nacre so they have a gritty texture that you can feel with your teeth. Be wary however of “pearls” made of ground shells. These can also be gritty. That’s when I go to …
The “Luster Test” - Fake pearls have only a surface shine, real pearls shine from within.
The “Rub Test” – Simply rub two pearls together. They should feel a little gritty, not slide off of each other.

Of course, you could always go to a jewelry store for authentication. For years I have treasured my double-strand pearl necklace and bracelet brought back from Hong Kong by a friend. I keep them in a velvet-lined box, and never spray hairspray or perfume while I wear them. A few years ago, when I learned this little trick, I did the tooth test – they were as smooth as glass – in fact, they were glass! Totally disheartening, but then I realized I needed a REAL set of pearls, which gave me the opportunity to study pearls, find reputable vendors -- and buy some. I discovered that Tahitian and Akoya pearls would cost me upwards of $4,000. They were beautiful, but I could think of a lot of other things I could spend $4,000 on. Toss that Wedding Garter like You Mean it!

Ever wonder why brides wear those little lacey things underneath their dresses? We’re talking about garters, here, of course. What does a traditional wedding garter look like? Why does the groom have to reach up there and grab it in front of the entire wedding party? Why do the groomsmen get so excited to catch it? Well, we were curious, and here’s what we found out:

Traditionally, wedding garters were colored blue to symbolize purity, fertility, and fidelity. Now, garters come in all sorts of colors. They’re also made from many different types of material. If you feel like getting really fancy, lacey garters are very popular these days.

Back in the Dark Ages, wedding parties tossed the bride’s garter like playing a game. The goal was to ring the garter around the nose of one of the groomsmen, sort of like a ring toss. The lucky groomsman who landed the garter would then gift it unto a girl of his choosing and be considered the next man to marry – similar to the tradition of the bride tossing the bouquet, eh?

So very pretty, pretty, pretty.

(If you don’t feel like parting with your gorgeous little garter, it is common for brides to wear two garters – one for tossing, one for keeping.)

Eventually, the tradition got sort of out-of-hand, and wedding parties began rushing the bride for the garter (like a stampede). Luckily, the ferocious nature of the garter tradition has been sloughed off in modern times, and the groomsmen have once again learned to wait patiently for the tossing.

Supposedly, all this garter flinging got its roots in the 14^th century with a practice called “flinging the stocking.” In England, wedding guests would rush the bridal chamber to help disrobe the bride and groom. (Pretty awkward, right?) The guests would all aim to grab the bride’s left stocking, supposing it was the luckiest stocking of the two, and in the process, they often managed to undress both the bride and groom down to the teeth. Then, they politely exited the bridal chamber, leaving the newlyweds to do their thing.

Someone sure is excited about catching that garter!

Of course, no one expects you to uphold these wacky traditions today, so don’t worry about it. Please.

Help! I’m the Maid of Honor… what do I do?

Being bestowed the role of Maid of Honor at your friend’s wedding is incredibly exciting. You’re totally honored that your friend cherishes you enough to want you to be a big part of planning and executing the greatest day of her life. But then – wait a minute – what are you actually supposed to do? How much planning is involved? How much time will you have to spend? Exactly how much is expected of you?

Depending on the bride, maids of honor may get a little work in the wedding planning department, or they may get A LOT of work. But here’s a quick list of the traditional duties of the Maid of Honor:

Help the bride pick out not only her wedding dress, but also the dresses of the bridesmaids. This can be a lot of fun – you get to go shopping with your best friend and help her try on and pick out beautiful dresses for all of you gorgeous gals involved in the ceremony. Plus, you’ll typically get to pick out your own dress. Pretty cool!
Help the bride choose a location for the wedding. If the bride is already dead-set on a location, then you’re good to go. But if she isn’t, it’s always nice to tag along and scope out some beautiful ceremony spots.
Keeping track of the guest list, invitations, and weddings favors are pretty hefty tasks. You don’t want to leave the bride hanging here. Together you can keep seat counts in check and assemble adorable favors for the guests.
Sample wedding cakes! Often the groom likes to get in on this action as well, but you are also entitled to a little taste-testing. If the bride needs helps deciding on a caterer, you should also help by trying out some samples with her. This is a delicious duty – be excited.
Arguably the most important task is planning the BACHELORETTE PARTY! It’s time to have fun, take a break from all the planning! There are plenty of websites available that can help you pick out party favors, cute games, and other sorts of party details. Have fun with this – the bride will appreciate your creativity and thoughtfulness.
On the day of the wedding, keep your cell phone on you – you’ll need to keep track of all members of the wedding party and make sure everything goes according to plan while the bride freaks out in her dressing room.

So many days we sit and watch shows like Who’s Wedding Is It, Anyway? on Style or Four Weddings on TLC and see the distinctive customs and traditions performed at weddings. But where does it come from and what does it mean?

We curious Gracious Bridal experts decided to highlight just a few of these historic and fascinating wedding traditions.

Jumping the Broom
At the end of the wedding ceremony, it is African American tradition to jump over a broom with your new husband or wife. With much debate on the exact origin, it is commonly agreed that it has roots in West Africa. In America’s southern region, it was common lore that whoever jumped the highest determined who would be the decision maker in the household. For Southern Africans, it represented the wife’s commitment to clean, while in England it became synonymous with irregular/non-church unions. During slavery times, African American marriages were not legalized, so the act of jumping the broom, either together or separate became symbolic of the new couple’s marriage.

“Mazel Tov!” Crushing Glass To finalize Jewish wedding ceremonies, the groom stomps on a glass and the guests yell, “Mazel Tov!” or “Siman Tov!”. As with most traditions, it gets kind of muddy when it comes to interpretations and origins of the tradition. Historically, the ritual symbolizes the destruction of The Holy Temple in Jerusalem. For those more superstitious, the loud noise is thought to drive away evil spirits. Other interpretations include the breaking of the glass is a reminder that even in times of happiness, there will be sadness; the broken glass is forever changed, just as the couple is by marriage; or that the couple’s happiness or children should be a plentiful as the shards of glass. Some couples even choose to save the glass from the ceremony in a symbolic box.

Breaking of the Coconut Breaking a coconut before starting any new undertaking is a Hindu ritual. Smashing of the coconut is symbolic of destroying the ego and being humble before God. The priest will sometimes place a coconut under the tire, before the wedding party departs to the Hindu temple. During the times when the bride and groom were carried by horse-drawn carriage, the breaking of the coconut demonstrated the road-worthiness of the horse and carriage.

Most store registries list the wedding date, not the shower date, although the gifts on the registry can be given at the showers and as wedding gifts. So feel free to peruse these for that perfect present to be give an the shower. Being a bridesmaid can be quite expensive, buying the dress, shoes, taking vacation time if it is a destination wedding, and attending a number of showers. A gracious bride does not expect a gift from their bridesmaids at EVERY shower. Many bridesmaids get together and give one FABULOUS shower or wedding gift. In many areas, it is acceptable to give only a shower gift, and not a wedding gift. Again, ask around about the local customs, and let graciousness and common sense be your guide.

You say a coral, A-line dress with a matching sash. Unlike Sarah, who fell in love the strapless, tea-length dress or Jessica wants the floor-length, mint green halter that doesn’t give her the “uni-boob”.

When it comes down to it, the bride has the final say in what her bridesmaids will be wearing. But in effort to try and please everyone, this planning stage is often the most stressful on relationships with some of the most important people in the bride’s life. Whether it’s trying to get the “right” dress or the dress at the right price or the dress that photographs the best - bridesmaid dress shopping is almost always complicated. From the bride’s point of view, the dresses should match and compliment her gown and the formality, styles and colors of the wedding. On the other hand, bridesmaids don’t want to spend money on a dress that they hate and feel uncomfortable in.

The key is: compromise.

Before you start rummaging the racks for that “Carolina Blue”, not “Dodger Blue” dress—which are totally different, we know - you need to decide who the bridesmaids will be. Dresses should be ordered no later than 6 months in advance of the weddings to insure arrival and allow for fittings and alterations. So start early!

In order to avoid conflicting ideas, like with our ill-fates "Tea-length Sarah" and "Uni-boob Jessica", the best solution is to bring along one person (2 people max) for the initial shopping. This could be the maid of honor or bridesmaid who can be mindful of the different shapes, sizes and skin tones. Bringing the entire entourage can likely result in arguments and hurt feelings.
Experts recommend not going over 300 dollars for the entire bridesmaid ensemble—that’s including dress, accessories and jewelry. You want them to look good, but don’t break the bank because these same ladies will be throwing the bridal shower and bachelorette party, buying gifts and possibly paying for their travel arrangements.

We all remember the scene in 27 Dresses where Kevin points at one of the dresses and asks, “What the hell is that?” Jane replies, “Theme wedding.” And Kevin follows up with, “What was the theme? Humiliation?” You definitely don’t want people to look back at your bridesmaids’ dresses or pictures and have this reaction. Choose a dress that’s comfortable, both visually and physically for your girls. And, ladies, trust me when i say - fit is everything! Your guests might be distracted from your vows when bridesmaids start dropping like flies from lack of oxygen!

Ideally, you would like to choose a dress that the gals can use more than once. Cocktail-style dresses are the most likely to be appropriate for other events in your bridesmaid's social calendars. Be mindful that you’re french vanilla, six-tier cake with butter cream filling might not be exactly what your chocolate-loving husband and guests like, which is why the groom’s cake often serves as an alternate choice to the traditional wedding cake. But in the past, some couples have served it as a tasty way to top off the rehearsal dinner.

In order not to compete with the wedding cake, we recommend opting for a different flavor for the groom's cake. You can pick your sweetie's favorite flavor such as chocolate, fresh fruit or even carrot cake.

When designing the groom’s cake, brides often choose themes ranging from his hobbies, interests or occupation. Before eagerly reaching for the nearest scanner, consider the stores at which you and your fiancé will register. Two to three different stores is customary. Be sure to keep in mind the nature of your guests and their location. Make sure each retailer is easily accessible to your attendants. While choosing online retailers may seem like a sure-fire solution to this problem, remember your Great Aunt Mary who can barely check her email! You wouldn’t want to alienate friends or families who want to splurge on the bride-and-groom-to-be, now would you?

Also, don’t feel boxed in by traditional gifts like china, pots and pans or bath towels. Many modern couples already cohabitate and have already acquired the kitchen essentials. If you and your sweetie love the outdoors, feel free to register for a set of sleeping bags and new tent. Guests prefer to buy something fun and functional over a gift that collects dust in the cabinet.

It’s easy to get caught up in the scanning-frenzy, so be sure to choose a wide range of items at different price points. A good rule of thumb is to keep one-third of your gifts under $50, another third in the $50-$150 range and the rest $150 and up. Again, though, consider your guests. A registry made up of gifts no one can afford is tragic and definite lose-lose.

Lastly, include more items than guests. For example, if you are inviting 100 guests, aim for 125 items and up. Even your last minute shoppers will have the pleasure of picking and choosing which gift they think you will enjoy the most!

All this gift-receiving is not without retribution! Be sure to send out thank-you notes within six weeks of receiving the gift. Be sure to name the gift you were giving and how you and your new husband are enjoying it. Naïve is the bride who fancies thank-you notes an afternoon project! These are time consuming but of phenomenal importance. As you open your gifts, we recommend keeping a spreadsheet, recording the item with the gift giver.
